Virginia summers are notorious for their heat, humidity, and thunderstorms. However, in the late afternoon and early evening exist the best hours for impromptu adventures, shows, or explorations into the life that abounds in the town of Vienna. Whether your ideal summer day is spent walking, running, hiking, biking, swimming, bowling, shopping, or immersing yourself in cultural experiences, the town of Vienna and its surrounding towns and spots offer hundreds of options for residents and visitors alike.

Sometimes these summer ideas are best done in groups, but many of these can be done on your own. Bring an open mind and maybe a bottle or two of water for most of these activities, even if they are indoors. For the outdoor experiences, bring a sturdy bottle of sunscreen. The best times to do anything this time of year are either in the morning or evening. With this in mind, read on to discover something new to try out this year.

The Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole

On the days best described as “scorchers,” when the outside sprinkler simply isn’t enough, it might be time to pack a lunch, several towels, and all the kids and head over to the Water Mine off Baron Cameron. Designed with an Old West Gold Rush theme, slides, pools, sprays, showers, and an interactive water playground will keep you cool and refreshed even on the hottest days. For thrill-seekers, Pete’s Peak, Prospectors Plummet, Big Pete and Little Pete offer wild, tumultuous rides and slides sure to inspire a hit of dopamine.

Cirque du Soleil

Later on in the year (and later in the evening) take a trip to an unusual circus show from the Cirque du Soleil in Tysons, right next to Tysons II where the Macy’s is located. Watch in awe as daring gymnasts defy the laws of gravity in a curio cabinet-themed show. The Cabinet of Curiosities is sure to give you a break from screens and an introduction to mind-melding human feats. Contortion, magic, and other wonders will happen right before your eyes. Give your kids the perfect essay topic for the start of the school year or enjoy some art by yourself with this show.

Bowlero

Bowling used to be an American classic pastime, and Bowlero is trying to bring it back for families and groups of friends. With such attractions as air hockey, beer pong, and an arcade, as well as a bar and food for all, Bowlero will give you ample opportunities to waste time having fun, no matter who you’re with. Bowlero is also around Tysons, making it a short drive away.

The Cave Gaming Center

Curious about e-sports? The Cave offers tournaments for Nintendo games like Smash Bros., Halo, and Project M. Find out more about them on Facebook and Twitter, and if you’re already a serious gamer, follow them on Twitch. Find the opportunity to play video games all night long if that interests you.

Penguin Paddling

In Occoquan, a river a few miles down Fairfax County Parkway, you’ll be able to take a kayak or a paddle board down the river, an experience for all ages (as long as they can swim.) For those who want unique tours, ask for a sunset tour, nature escape, or a board meeting to explore some of the natural wonders in Occoquan.

First Stage

For a dash of local theater, you can’t get much better than 1st Stage in Tysons Corner, but specifically first timers should attend the Logan Festival of Solo Performance. Celebrate solo performances, workshops, discussions, and even. Currently on stage is the Under the Sea with Dredgie McGee, an event designed to entertain all ages and featuring pirates and ghosts.

Chantilly Summer Antique Market

For collectors, antique enthusiasts, and bored people who can’t find anything to do, the Chantilly Summer Antique Market allows shoppers to look at vintage clothing, estate jewelry, furniture, rugs, repurposed furniture, and other items available for sale. This is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s biggest indoor antiques and collectibles flea market, which offers low prices and the ability to find hidden treasures.
